Today there are fewer homeless people on the streets of Kelowna.
The city's latest supportive housing facility, Heath House, has officially opened.
The Canadian Mental Health Association will run the building located on Highway 97 near Leathead Road.
"This past week, many people and organizations worked together to execute, with incredible precision, the moving-in of people into Heath House." said CMHA Executive Director Shelagh Turner.
In 2017, BC Housing bought the former Good Night Inn. The building was renovated over the course of the last year to transform the space into permanent supportive housing for the homeless.
"The stats show that housing with supports not only leads to better health and safety for our community, it is far more cost effective than the status quo." said Mayor Colin Basran.
At last count, there were 286 people without homes in Kelowna.
Since October, the Province has created 86 units of supportive housing. Projects in development on Agassiz Road and McIntosh Road will introduce an additional 100 units.
"This is their home and, in fact, it's the first home that many of the residents will have had in a very, very long time." said Turner.
