We are starting to see signs of stabilization at the Highway 97 closure north of Summerland. There has be no new slide movement, and geotechnical assessments are ongoing. While Highway 97 remains closed with no estimated time of reopening, we are hopeful this progress continues, and that we are soon able to provide a possible timeline towards the reopening of the highway.
Scaling and drilling work resumed yesterday, after work was halted Wednesday due to unsafe conditions for workers from inclement weather. A small blast Wednesday removed some overhanging rock that has allowed for safe use of an excavator at the site. The excavator is removing rock and allowing access for equipment up the north side of the slope.
The next blast will be sometime Friday, which will cause up to a 45 minute delay on the Callan Road detour. The blasting will not occur between the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Callan Road continues to work well for both light vehicles and commercial trucks.
Please note that the speed limit for this 900 metre detour is 30 km/h, and drivers should use caution.
