A program that provides homeless people with a home will be ending in June.
Chandler House, the only 'Housing First' program in Kelowna, has reached the end of a 3-year funding agreement this month and has until June to move out.
The program is based around the idea that providing a residence is the first step in ending homelessness.
Speaking with AM1150’s Early Edition host Phil Johnson, Executive Director Jan Shultz says despite the loss of funding, they're hopeful they will find a new place to continue the program.
“We’re not giving up with the concept. As you say, we were the first to do congregate site, housing first in Kelowna and we’re not stopping now, we just need to find a location”
She says they have been looking for a bigger location that will be able to house more people for about a year.
The program has operated on Chandler Street off Highway 97 since 2014 and Shultz says it’s had huge success.
“We have rotated people through who have moved on to their own place, one started his own business” she says.
Alternate housing arrangements are being made for the 8 residents currently living at the house.
