The World Curling Federation has confirmed the World Mixed Doubles and Senior Curling Championships 2020 will be held in the Kelowna Curling Club from 18-25 April 2020.
World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness, said: “I am delighted that Kelowna has bid to host these world championships in 2020 so soon after running a successful World Mixed event in 2018. The Kelowna Curling Club is an ideal venue to house these world events. With over 60 teams competing and supporters and media attending from across the world, as well as the World Mixed Doubles being one of our live TV events, I am in no doubt the coverage generated for curling’s newest Olympic discipline will be second to none.”
Kelowna has hosted three world curling championships before – the World Women’s in 1986, the World Juniors in 2002 and the World Mixed in 2018.
Kelowna Curling Club General Manager, Jock Tyre, said: “The Kelowna Curling Club is very proud to have been given an opportunity to showcase our club and city to the curling world. Our world class volunteers did such an amazing job with the 2018 World Mixed that it makes us feel very prepared to step it up a notch with the World Seniors and Mixed Doubles.”
The World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship has been held in Canada twice previously – in Lethbridge, Alberta in 2017 and in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 2013.
"We're thrilled to welcome the World Mixed Doubles and Seniors championships back to Canada, and we're delighted that the World Curling Federation has awarded these events to the beautiful city of Kelowna," said Katherine Henderson, Chief Executive Officer of Curling Canada. "British Columbia has proven time and time again that it hosts world-class curling championships, and we're confident that this will be the case in 2020 in Kelowna."
