The Independent Investigations Office of BC has found that police were not to blame when two suspects went into medical distress after being taken into custody.
The suspects, a 24-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, were spotted in a stolen pickup truck near Lambly Lake on the morning of Wednesday, September 26th. West Kelowna RCMP had to use a spike belt to stop them, and brought in a canine unit to help apprehend them.
Shortly after arriving at the RCMP detatchment, the two suspects appeared to go in medical distress, and at one point became unresponsive. They were given immediate medical aid before being transported to hospital.
The IIO determined that police acted appropriately, and the medical emergencies suffered by the suspects were unrelated to their arrest, and caused instead by ingesting substances.
They're both expected to make a full recovery. It's unknown at this time if they'll face any charges in connection to the stolen pickup truck.
