The BC Coroners Service reports that in 2016, Kelowna was the second most dangerous city in the province for a homeless person.
In Kelowna that year, a total of 10 homeless people died - and if you take population into account - that's second only to Victoria.
The Coroner says province-wide - more than half of the homeless who died in 2016 - were killed by accidental drug overdoses or alcohol poisoning.
Those fatalities accounted for 53% of all homeless deaths that year - up from an average of 34% between 2007 and 2015.
Last year in Kelowna, there were 286 people defined as homeless.
Other key findings include:
-In 2016, there were 175 deaths of homeless individuals in British Columbia. This figure represents an increase of 140% over the previous number of deaths recorded in 2015.
-From 2007 to 2016, Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health accounted for 59% of deaths among homeless individuals.
-In 2016, the townships with the most deaths among homeless individuals were Vancouver, Surrey, Victoria and Kelowna.
The information contained in the report includes deaths among homeless persons living outdoors, sheltered homeless and individuals residing in short-term shelters, safe-house or transition-house accommodation for an unknown length of time.
