Kelowna's Mayor is joining his counterparts in pushing the province to do more about the opioid crisis.
At the Union of BC Municipalities Convention in Vancouver, Colin Basran heard comments from other BC mayors he agrees with.
"While there's been a lot of investment, there's still a long ways to go," said Basran. "What we're seeing in our communities is a lot of what we're calling compassion fatigue. We know a lot of investment is being made, but people just aren't seeing that investmentĀ translated into safer streets and less needles being left in various parts of our communities."
There were no firm committments from Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Judy Darcy, but she did annouce some new funding.
"Community Wellness Grants is what they're called," said Basran. "This is something the City of Kelowna could potentially tap into to help with the needle pick up."
Basran added another major concerns is the lack of recovery spaces and support to help people kick their addiction.
The UBMC is all this week in Vancouver.
