A Kelowna man accused of aggravated assault was found not guilty by a jury on Thursday after a half day of deliberations.
Jonathan Bruce was working as a bouncer at the Liquid Zoo Nightclub in Kelowna when an altercation reportedly took place between him and a patron, Rhett Miller.
Security footage saw the two men going outside the club, where Bruce swung at Miller, causing the latter to fall to the floor with injuries such as broken bones and a bloody mouth.
Bruce claimed that he used self defense against Miller, who was reportedly 'very intoxicated' at the time of the incident.
Defense attorney Cory Armour, who represented Bruce in court, said the claim of self defense helped tip the trial in favour of him and his client.
"The law is that, if there is a basis for inferring self defense, then the Crown must actually disprove it," says Armour. "And in this case, the crown didn't do it, and the jury was right to see that."
Armour was unable to comment on what Bruce's next plans would be following the end of the trial.
