Kelowna Community Gardens has 17 plots all with lengthy wait lists.
Spokesperson Georgiann Kasdorf told AM 1150’s Early Edition that as a team of volunteers they don’t wish to start more, “We’ve switched our focus, or our involvement, to encouraging other people to build gardens.”
Kasdorf says there has been an increased interest in stratas and church groups starting gardens and she’s offering her expertise to those who wish to get one going.
Kasdorf also wants to remind people how a community garden operates, "Community garden doesn't mean free for the taking, it means people are working hard to grow food for their own families."
Kasdorf says the gardens attract lots of people out walking, but because some people don’t understand how it works they pick food as they go.
