The City of Kelowna announced yesterday possible plans to close Bernard Avenue to pedestrian traffic only to support the business community.
Mark Burley with the Downtown Kelowna Association spoke about the plans on AM 1150’s Early Edition.
“First of all, don’t assume this is a block party, because it's not. The cross streets will remain open and if you or I were walking down the street, observing our six-foot distancing from each other, and we got to the intersection say at Pandosy by the radio station and Mosaic Books and it was red, we'd have to stop. And then we'd just cross into the middle of the street into the next block, into the 300 block from 400.”
Burley said doing this will allow restaurants to expand their patios onto the sidewalk and parking spaces.
There will be a six metre walk way down Bernard to allow for emergency vehicles.
Council will make a decision at Monday’s meeting.
