The Kelowna Courthouse was evacuated briefly after a suspicious package was discovered Thursday morning.
Police were called to the area at 9:20am after the item was found outside the building on Water St in the grass.
“We cordoned off the area for safety reasons and after a thorough investigation we were able to identify that item as being non-suspicious and non-dangerous,” said Constable Lesley Smith.
The courthouse is less than a block away from the Delta Grand Hotel, where federal Liberal MP’s are gathered for their summer caucus meeting.
Smith said the incident did not have an impact on the meeting.
“I understand that people in the area would have known that something was going on,” said Smith “At the time of our initial investigation we did just cordon off one block, had that investigation gone further we may have evacuated more buildings but at that time it was just the courthouse we were concerned about.”
Court was back in session after about an hour.
