About 400 Interior Health patients have been displaced by the wildfires.
IH CEO Chris Mazurkewich says most of the patients have been relocated to Prince George and Kamloops, in what was the largest patient evacuation for the health authority.
Only about 20 assisted-living patients have been relocated to Kelowna and are staying in hotels, but Mazurkewich says Kelowna General Hospital is a safety net if needed.
“Kelowna General has been over capacity but they’re geared up if they have to take people, if it gets worse,” he said at a news conference on Tuesday “People from Williams Lake couldn’t come south, they have to go north, so they go to Prince George.”
Hospitals and health facilities in Ashcroft, 100 Mile House and Alexis Creek have been closed due to the wildfires and the hospital in Williams Lake has scaled back its operations.
