Kelowna RCMP, and Speed Watch volunteers, were out Wednesday morning enforcing school zone speed limits in the city.
Corporal Jesse O'Donaghey says most drivers were abiding by the 30-kilometre-an-hour limit, but they did nab one speeder at around 8:30 am, who also faces an additional impaired driving charge. He says the driver was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition for 90 days.
Speeding in a school zone will cost you $196 and 3 points against your license.
O'Donaghey also reminds you to remember the rules around school buses. He says if the lights are flashing, and the stop sign is extended - it's illegal to pass the bus in either direction.
"If caught doing so we can issue a violation ticket to the driver, or even the owner of the vehicle, for $368 for failing to stop for a school bus," he says.
O'Donaghey also says that frequently throughout the school year - Speed Watch volunteers, with digital speed signs, will be out monitoring traffic "and reporting back to our municipal traffic section on the number of violators they observed over the speed limit, and depending on the circumstances, they may even give us license plate and vehicle descriptions, and we can follow up afterwards," he says.
The lower school zone speed limit is in force on school days between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm.
