Autumn Blaze Maple, Cardinal Mountain Ash, Hot Wing Maple, Ivory Silk Lilac, Red Rocket Red Maple and Top Gun Bur Oak are the options this year in the City of Kelowna’s NeighbourWoods program. Starting Tuesday, March 13, residents are invited to purchase one tree at a cost of $40 + GST.
Urban Forestry Supervisor, Andrew Hunsberger says the goal is to increase the overall tree canopy for Kelowna. "There definitely is a lack of trees on private land, in backyards and around industrial buildings, so the idea here is to provide discounted trees that people can utilize and plant on their property." Hunsberger says the current canopy is around 13 percent. "Our goal is 20 percent, so we can't do that alone. We need help from homeowners and business owners."
View the six tree descriptions and order online at kelowna.ca/neighbourwoods or call 250-469-8800, then pick up the tree at the NeighbourWoods event on Saturday, April 21 at the Mission Recreation Park Arboretum, 4105 Gordon Drive between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
A total of 500 trees will be available for purchase until sold out. Since 2010 the program has planted 3500 trees in Kelowna.
The program is restricted to Kelowna residents and is limited to one tree per household.
