Lightning over the weekend sparked 41 new fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre which includes Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton.
Information Officer Rachel Witt at the BC Wildfire Service says 37 of these fires were spot-sized.
"You can picture a smoldering stump, or a 10 by 10 metre area of fire," she says. "We did know that this lightning storm was going to be passing through, and we did prepare resources accordingly. We were able to get crews on a lot of these fires, and were able to tackle them before they grew to a larger size."
Witt says the wind, Saturday evening, pushed the Gottfriedsen Mountain fire back on itself and it also received some rain.
This fire is about 550 hectares in size and is located about 24 kilometres west of West Kelowna.
Witt says as of Sunday, crews and heavy equipment have built guards around 75% of the fire.
14 fires were also sparked by lightning in the Penticton fire zone.
