A Kelowna mother’s contribution to KGH will ensure that young mental health patients will have a bit of a brighter experience at the Hospital.
Elizabeth Koerson’s son Robert took his life at the age of 26 last year after a long battle with mental illness. In his memory, Koerson made a $20-thousand dollar donation to the Adolescent Psychiatric Unit to revitalize its courtyard to make it more welcoming.
“Robert spent some time at KGH,” says Koersen. “Even though he can no longer be with us, his beautiful way of uplifting others remains. I’m proud of him. And I know he would have loved what we’ve made possible for young people who are struggling.”
The courtyard was painted with a mural to reflect Robert’s love for nature and wildlife.
“The transformation is really unbelievable,” said Colleen McEwan, Manager of the APU. “Our patients are going through a lot. To be able to come outside and just sit in this beautiful space, see the sunshine… it’s a really special gift for these kids.”
Robert previously served in the Armed Forces as a medic overseas, and also helped out with the International Peshmerga Volunteers, a team of veterans who provide training and mentoring to Kurdish people in Iraq.
