The man who allegedly crashed into a police cruiser last April after assaulting people downtown has been found not criminally responsible for the incident due to a mental disorder.
42-year-old Mark Fines, from Chase, B.C., has been in custody since his arrest.
In the morning of April 1, 2016 a man was assaulted in the alleyway behind Prospera Place after he refused to turn over his keys. The suspect ran off and then assaulted a man and his daughter nearby, stealing the young girl's backpack before fleeing in a Ford sedan on Ellis Street.
The sedan ended up crashing into a police cruiser that was responding to the earlier assaults. The suspect got out of his vehicle and assaulted the officer behind the wheel.
Fines was arrested at the scene with the help of civilians nearby, and charged with robbery, assaulting a peace officer, uttering threats and dangerous operation of a vehicle.
Last Friday, a judge found him not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. He remains in custody pending a review board hearing that will take place within the next 45 days.
