A Kelowna man was not injured after a would-be thief pepper sprayed him last night.
Police say the 56-year-old man, who works as a custodian at an apartment in the 2300 block of Gordon Drive, was leaving work at 9:30pm when he heard the sound of glass breaking. When he entered the apartment's parkade he saw a man leaning into the smashed window of a car.
The victim confronted the suspect who first threatened the man with bolt cutters before firing pepper spray and fleeing northbound on Gordon Dr. on a red BMX bicycle. The victim managed to avoid most of the pepper blast.
The suspect is described as a caucasian male in his 20's, around 5 foot 7 with a red moustache. He was wearing a black ball cap, green hooded canvas Army type coat and blue jeans.
Police say while they recognize the victim was acting with good intentions, they recommend the public avoid confrontations with persons engaged in illegal activities.
"A person who feels threatened can act in an unpredictable and aggressive manner, said Constable. Steve Holmes in a news release "If that person has a weapon, they may use it in an attempt to get away. Instead of confronting, make observations of the individual and the incident, that can be passed on to Police in order to aid their investigation."
Anyone with information on the assault is asked to contact police.
