Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran takes issue with opponents who say promotion of Bike to Work Week is a waste of taxpayers money.
He says the city is trying to convince people that there are viable alternatives to cars.
"I think the biggest reason we do it, in terms of all the attention it's getting, is this thing called climate change, which is kind of a big deal. And so, people need to start living differently. Is Bike to Work Week a waste of money when you consider that Kelowna has one of the highest participation rates in the country? I whole heartedly disagree with that statement or sentiment."
Basran says bicycles and pedal power are important components for reducing greenhouse gases. He says the city is on a mission to reduce its carbon footprint and promoting cleaner living alternatives to residents will continue as long as he is Mayor.
