It was announced on Thursday, March 1st, that Mountain Equipment Co-op would no longer be selling any products from Vista Outdoor, due to the supplier's ties to the gun industry.
MEC has sold Vista brands such as CamelBak and Bushnell for years, but once the current stock runs out, they will no longer be sold from its stores in the US and Canada.
This comes as a response to a public outcry following last month's shooting in Florida that saw 17 dead. Now more than ever, retailers are being urged to do what they can to help prevent military grade weapons form flying off the shelf as easily as a pair of jeans.
One of the companies that Vista Outdoor owns is Savage Arms, which manufactures assault rifles similar to the ones seen in recent shootings.
So far, the change seems to be resonating well with MEC customers.
"I think it's a good initiative by MEC to support the anti-gun movement in the states," says one customer outside the Kelowna location.
Another customer implied that MEC "didn't want to be connected with a company that could have been a catalyst to (the shootings)."
Other major retailers, such as Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods have taken similar action by no longer selling assault rifles, or by raising the age limit on buying them.
Employees and managers at the Kelowna location were unable to comment on Thursday's decision.
