The federal government has announced its' 10 year housing strategy. 40 billion over a 10 year stretch, starting next April. Most of the funding was already announced in the 2017 budget so it doesn't impact the federal government's fiscal plan.
Some of the highlights include:
Building 100,000 new affordable housing units.
Repairing 300,000 affordable housing units.
Protecting 385,000 households from losing an affordable home.
Providing 300,000 households with financial assistance through the new Canada Housing Benefit(which won't begin until after the next federal election).
Removing 530,000 households from housing need
The Prime Minister says the goal is to reduce chronic homelessness by 50 per cent.
