Central Okanagan Public Schools just received new information in the case of the student who ingested a substance off of the floor of his classroom last week.
Laboratory tests of the sample obtained by the RCMP indicated that the substance was an illicit form of benzodiazepine, a class of drug commonly prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, and other ailments.
The initial investigation did not reveal the origin of the substance and the RCMP continues to investigate. Police encourage anyone in the community with information to come forward and contact the local detachment at 250-762-3300.
The child who ingested the substance recovered last week and has returned to class. The principal of the school spoke to the class in order to ease the student's return, help the young students understand the incident, and remind the children about safety around unknown substances.
