A new program, being launched by the John Howard Society in the Okanagan, seeks to prevent intimate partner violence by helping men who've been abusive.
The 15-week free program, called Stop Taking it Out on Your Partner, begins January 23rd in Kelowna.
Society Executive Director Gaelene Askeland says it's targeted at men who've abused or threatened to abuse, or used controlling behaviour in intimate relationships.
"We get guys coming in all the time, who walk up to our front door and say ' I know I've got a problem with anger, I know I have this problem, my wife tells me all the time' and there's nothing for them in the Okanagan up until this point," she says.
Askeland says help is available for men on probation, but this is a first for those who have not been charged with domestic-related offences.
"It's a lot of self learning, understanding who you are in conflict, understanding how you respond to things, how you can learn to do things differently; make different choices for yourself," she says.
Askeland will join Gord Vizzutti on Monday, January 16th to discuss the 'STOP' program on AM 1150's Early Edition.
