In an effort to expand and promote Kelowna’s arts sector, the City has partnered with property developers Bentall Kennedy to bring a new sculpture to downtown Kelowna.
The sculpture will be located at the site of the Interior Health building on Doyle Avenue, and could be complete by fall of 2021.
While it’s unknown at this time what the sculpture will look like, City Public Art coordinator David James says there will be a competition of sorts between artists to decide that.
“We typically go through a two-stage public art process,” says James. “The first stage would be an expression of interest, so we’d try and garner interest from public artists. Then we evaluate the submissions that we get and we select three to five artists to submit detailed proposals.”
Those final submissions will be then be evaluated by the Public Art Committee, stakeholders, and City officials.
The total budget for the sculpture comes to $120,000, which will be split evenly by the City and Bentall Kennedy.
