A revitalization of Kelowna's downtown Towne Centre mall has council optimistic.
Along with a name change, "The District" would have new backlit signage, along with brick cladding around the entire exterior.
It would also feature more wood, with a new canopy and two large beams extending upward, like the Paramount marquee.
Councillor Luke Stack says that design had him flashing back to discussions about the downtown streetscape revitalization.
"At the time, there was some who criticized that look, thinking that it wasn't nice enough. And I remember I asked what was the inspiration of that, and they said the inspiration of that was the Kettle Valley railway, and the beautiful, huge trellis structures," he said.
"That actually gave me a very positive feeling toward that, and now to see that same theme carried further into our Bernard streetscape is really, really great news."
Councillor Maxine DeHart says she likes the idea to rebrand it as "The District"
"Very, very pleased to see this, I think it's just beautiful, and I really like the new name," she said.
"A long time coming. I think everybody loved our Towne Centre mall, but as time goes on, things change and developments change. So when I looked at the package, I was really impressed."
Mayor Colin Basran says he likes the changes inside, too.
"The interior public space of the mall will be updated significantly, to provide a brighter.and more inviting experience as well," he said.
"Kudos all around to this revitalization of this iconic area of our community."
The 37-year-old Towne Centre is spread over a nearly 1.5 acre lot.
MKK Property Corp purchased the site last year.
