Interior Health is quelling concerns about the possibility of a measles outbreak in the region.
“We don’t have any confirmed cases” said Medical Health Officer Dr. Silvina Mema. “Really, there isn’t a lot here to do, other than ask people to get immunized”
33 students were ordered to stay home this week after a measles outbreak at a pair of schools in Vancouver. Mema is satisfied with Vancouver Coastal Health’s efforts to limit the spread.
“As far as we know, that outbreak has been contained. People who have been exposed have been notified, and they are dealing with that.”
According to Interior Health, the measles vaccination rate in the Okanagan is 86 percent. Mema hopes to see that number grow.
“Really what we are trying to do here is to remind people that they need to follow the BC immunization schedule and that includes measles containing vaccine and other vaccines that are also effective at preventing other diseases.”
Interior Health is advising locals concerned about possible measles exposure to call their local public health centre.
Anyone who may be experiencing early symptoms, such as fever, runny nose, or inflamed eyes, should call a doctor.
