At least eleven Canadian cities have been identified as having too much lead in their drinking water.
Kelowna is not one of them.
Water Quality Supervisor Ed Hoppe says at one time we had galvanized pipes delivering our drinking water and they typically had some lead in the solder that joined them together.
"But back in the 1960's there was a retrofit program where the majority of that was all replaced with newer material," said Hoppe. "As of right now about 2% of our pipes still currently in the city with galvanized pipes, but nothing specifically dedicated with a lead service line."
City drinking water is also tested on a regular basis.
"We do annual testing for water quality which includes a full suite of metals, including lead. That information is available on our website. Accessible records of our water testing results are available in that package."
The City delivers safe drinking water to the property line and those lines are lead free. If you're concerned about the pipes in your home, you can have your water tested by a private lab.
