The Regional District of the North Okanagan is looking at banning plastic checkout bags, many of which end up in the landfill.
"It is going to be challenging for some to these stores. Victoria has done it, they've banned plastic bags and straws and I've been there many times throughout the year and they seem to be coping fine".
Chairperson Kevin Acton says the ban wouldn’t take effect until January.
"If we can get people to use paper or better yet use recyclable bags, like a cloth bag, it makes a big difference in our landfills," Acton added.
Under the change, customers would be encouraged to bring reusable bags with them, or expect to purchase a reusable bag or paper bag.
