It's been a week since the City of Kelowna began accepting pot shop applications, but they have yet to actually receive any.
Planning Manager Ryan Smith says there is still a great deal of interest from prospective pot shop owners in the community.
"We've had dozens and dozens of conversations with interested applicants, and I believe that we'll probably begin seeing applications later this week," says Smith. "I bet that we'll probably have between 20 and 30 by the end of the month."
Smith says the City's current retail cannabis regulation model, which includes high application and rezoning costs, will ensure that Kelowna only gets the best pot shops by next year.
The cost just to apply to open a pot shop is $1,000. If that application is approved for the rezoning phase (expected to take place from December to January), there would be an additional cost of around $9,500.
