Commissionaires BC has thrown a wrinkle into the strike plans of 17 Kelowna jail guards.
When CUPE Local 338, the union representing the guards, sent in the notice to strike on Monday they chose to email instead of fax. The Commissionaires appealed to the labour relations board, who agreed that's not the required way to submit. The board has ruled the guards cannot strike without first re-submitting the strike notice, with all the proper requirements being met.
At that point they would have to wait the required time, and because they're an essential service only some of the guards could actually demonstrate at any given time.
The dispute between Local 338 and Commissionaires BC is over wages.
