The number of overdose calls, attended by Kelowna paramedics, continue to rise.
Numbers from BC Emergency Health Services show crews responded to 92 suspected overdoses in Kelowna last month - up from 82 in February and slightly higher than 87 in January.
In West Kelowna - there were 12 overdose calls in March, up from 5 in February - while in January, ambulance crews responded to 9 calls.
Across the Interior Health region - there were 268 overdose calls in March up from 228 in February and 258 in January.
The presence of the deadly opioid fentanyl in streets drugs is largely to blame for the increase in overdoses and illicit drug deaths in BC.
The BC Coroners Service says, so far this year, 219 people have died from illicit drug overdoses in the province - 17 of those in Kelowna.
This week, Interior Health officially applied to Health Canada for a mobile safe injection unit for Kelowna.
