One man is in police custody after a standoff at a house near Highway 97 and McCurdy Road Thursday night.
Kelowna RCMP say they were called at 9:45 pm for a report of a dispute at a home in the 1000 block of McCurdy Rd. that involved threats of violence and a firearm. The dispute was between two residences of the home, one of whom called police while fleeing the house.
Police say when they arrived, one man was still inside the home.
“Officers with Kelowna RCMP general duty and Police Dog Services contained the residence and cordoned off the vicinity of the home for public safety,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey in a news release “Specially trained officers with the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team (SED ERT), along with a crisis negotiator were called to the scene to assist.”
After several hours of negotiations over the phone, police arrested the 38-year-old man at 3:00am, Friday morning. He is facing potential charges and was expected to make a court appearance today.
Another man who lives in the house told AM1150 he wasn’t home at the time of the dispute, but arrived when officers had swarmed the area.
“About quarter to 10 [this morning] they finally let me into the house, they found a firearm, sawed off shotgun, ammunition.”
Police have not confirmed whether they found any weapons, but say they still have the scene secured, as the home remains part of an ongoing investigation.
The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, says up to 30 officers were in the area. He says his roommate that was arrested allegedly got into a violent rage and smashed a window.
“I guess he got some bad drugs or something like that and he lost it, went nuts, started throwing s*** around, breaking s***, that's what I heard.”
The man says 4 people live in the house.
