The mayor of Penticton is one of several residents who are on evacaution alert due to the Christie Mountain wildfire.
"It happened pretty fast. Our fire department along with the Regional District got on it right away".
John Vassilaki told AM 1150 News, he knew something was wrong when staff were rushing in and out of council chambers during Tuesday afternoon's regular council meeting.
An emergency registration centre has been set up for displaced residents to register.
"Everyone is in high spirits. There are lots of people from the South Okanagan there in order to help. I am sure a lot of people will be coming in as the day progresses", Vassilaki added.
