Nowadays, family pets are more like family members; and losing them can be just as traumatic.
More than 62 per cent of households have a pet, which means most people will experience the devastation of putting a pet down at least once in their lifetime.
One person recognized the lack in support and community resources for people dealing with this type of loss.
Jared Starling, owner of Okanagan Pet Cremation, is hosting a grief support conference on March 17th.
Veterinary staff will have the opportunity to speak with councillors and discuss how to help support their clients through the grieving process.
Dr. Oz from Rose Valley Veterinary Hospital in West Kelowna believes his profession needs more groups like this.
“It’s not the same as human medicine. We don’t really talk about it. We don’t have groups and supports. I think we lack in this aspect.”
According to Oz, euthanizing a family pet is one of the hardest things to do.
“I try to support the owners as much as I can and make sure they know they are making the right decision.”
