West Kelowna RCMP kept careful watch over an empty lot in West Kelowna overnight.
The property in the 2400 block of Old Okanagan Highway was cordoned off with police tape after a local identified a possible explosive on site.
After officers secured the perimeter, they called in the RCMP's Explosive Disposal unit from the Lower Mainland to investigate the device.
The unit arrived Wednesday morning and inspected the item reported to police. They determined the device was actually a kind of fuse commonly used on construction sites.
Police confirmed Wednesday the unit had already been discharged and was no longer active.
Despite the false alarm, West Kelowna RCMP are thanking the person who reported the device. They're encouraging locals to always err on the side of caution, especially when dealing with potential explosives.
