The ministry is continuing work on the Highway 97 slide site, and will reopen the highway as soon as it is safe.
Our site monitoring has shown no new movement over the past five days, which has allowed construction and scaling crews at the site to make good progress.
Excavators continued to pull down material over the weekend and will continue breaking and pulling down rock this week. Scalers are not required at this point as work can safely be completed by heavy equipment, but there may still need to be a few more sections scaled and/or blasted as we work towards an opening.
If there are no further challenges (i.e. severe weather) or slide movement, we are hoping to restore traffic to the highway by the end of next week.
The Callan Road detour continues to function well and is open 24 hours/day, with occasional stoppages for blasting work.
Please note that the speed limit for this detour is 30 km/h, and drivers should use caution when travelling through the area.
Commercial vehicles that exceed 3.8 metres in width are only permitted on the detour between midnight and 5 a.m. Pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted on the detour.
Our maintenance contractor will continue to maintain the Callan Road detour, and has dedicated extra equipment for plowing and sanding the road as necessary.
We will continue to provide updates on the situation as new information becomes available. We remind drivers to continue to check DriveBC.ca and @DriveBC on Twitter for the most up-to-date information.
