While many of Canada's major cities have seen protests popping up outside of Tim Hortons restaurants, there haven't been any in Kelowna so far, at least not yet.
The protests have spread to British Columbia either way, however, with the majority taking place in Vancouver. At least six demonstrations could be found throughout the city on Friday.
The protests stem from Tim Hortons cutting back on employees' benefits after the recent minimum wage hike. Such benefits include paid vacation days and paid breaks.
BC Federation of Labour President Irene Lanzinger, who helped oversee one of the protests in Vancouver, says there has been interest in unionizing Tim Hortons employees. However, there are challenges that would come with that, as unionization would have to happen site-by-site.
"They're small workforces," says Lanzinger. "There's no way now within the labour code, and there should be, to organize across the sector."
Other cities that have seen these protests include Toronto, Saskatoon, Regina, and Calgary. There hasn't been any word on whether or not they will spread to smaller markets.
