Every year across Canada there are injuries, fires or damage to property as a result of the careless use of illegal fireworks. Vernon has had homes damaged or lost due to the careless discharge or storage of fireworks over the years.
Last night while families enjoyed a night of Halloween fun, firefighters and bylaw officers were out in the community to encourage a safe environment for all residents.
“Several times throughout the year we remind residents that the personal use of fireworks is not permitted within the City of Vernon,” said Fire Chief David Lind.
“Unfortunately, improper storage and use of fireworks remains to be a common practice in the community.”
Within the City of Vernon, the use or storage of fireworks without a permit may result in a fine of up to $300 and multiple fines may be issued for a single infraction. Last night, several fines were issued for firework violations.
Vernon Fire Rescue would like to again urge residents to refrain from the unlawful use of fireworks and remind the public that there are often fireworks displays around the region put on by qualified organizations with risk controls in place.
The City of Vernon would like to thank the many community members who safety celebrated Halloween last night and who continue to prioritize community safety.
