The Pacific Assistance Dogs Society is expecting 40 new puppies between now and January, and they're looking for volunteers to train them all.
Brian Smith, Developmental Coordinator for the Okanagan branch of PADS, says this isn't a job for your casual pet owner.
"You have your dog from anywhere between 12 and 18 months, and you take your dog anywhere you go, whether it's to a doctor's appointment, to a movie, or to the local grocery store," says Smith. "You're also expected to attend puppy class once a week."
After your time with the dog is over, they'll be turned over to PADS for advanced training.
Most of the dogs are trained to assist people with mobility issues. For example: if someone in a wheelchair has trouble picking up their keys or opening doors, the dogs can do it for them.
