The RCMP are gearing up for a busy season on the Okanagan waters.
Constable Kelly Brett says the RCMP vessels will be on patrol throughout the summer making sure everyone stays safe:
"Speed is often the contributing factor to a lot of the accidents that happen on the lake. It just comes down to general awareness. If everyone knows the rules of the water, is courteous to each other and watches out for everybody else, we should be ok".
Brett says impaired boating will also be one of the officers top priority this summer.
Drinking and boating accounts for approximately 40 per cent of boating-related fatalities on Canadian waterways.
"Driving impaired on a boat is the same as a car. If you are the driver of a boat or the person who is captaining the boat for the day, you can be charged for impaired driving just like you would be in a vehicle", Brett added.
