Intersection Safety Cameras at 140 intersections across BC will now have 24-hour surveillance.
Originally operating six hours a day, the need for full surveillance was made apparent after a record 350,000 crashes were reported in BC last year, with 60 percent of them happening in intersections.
While the majority of Intersection Safety Cameras are in Vancouver, some can be found in Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Kamloops, Vernon, and Kelowna.
The following intersections in Kelowna are armed with an ISC:
Every year, an average of over 11,000 crashes happen at camera-armed intersections.
The ministry of transportation has announced plans to add technology to some of these intersections in order to ticket the fastest drivers going through them. Locations for those selected sites will be announced in the fall.
Once this technology is implemented, new signs will be put up to warn drivers that they are approaching an enforced intersection.
A study by ICBC back in 2016 found that 81 percent of B.C. motorists support the current intersection safety camera program.
