Proposed changes to the regional solid waste management plan were presented to council this week.
One of the ideas is to potentially add a waste collection depot somewhere in the Mission.
RDCO environmental services manager Peter Rotheisler says that's because of a lack of services in that part of town.
"The Mission area, based on the analysis that we've done, has over 20,000 households with greater than a half an hour travel distance to the nearest solid waste disposal location," he said.
"Compare that with Peachland, where there was under 2000 within half an hour, and Lake Country, which was around 5000. Potentially, there's a need for that within the Mission."
He says this is also far from a done deal.
"Identifying location, and what materials would be collected at that facility, would take a lot of thought," he said.
"Would it run seasonally or full-time? There's a lot of considerations for something like that."
The idea of a plastic bag ban was also talked about, with Rotheisler saying it's been tossed around for awhile.
"This has been something that has been discussed on a number of occasions, at council and regional board levels over the last 15 years, and continues to be something that is percolating within the public," he said.
"It is within the new plan, for being examined in terms of how that would look, and what that would look like."
A ban like that wouldn't eliminate you from buying garbage bags, but rather would ban retailers - including grocery stores - from providing them.
A similar ban already exists in Alberta's Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which includes Fort McMurray.
Another idea is to use cameras on garbage trucks to track who puts out how much garbage, and charge more or less depending on it.
As well, a proposal to shift garbage collection from every week to every other week hasn't received much support.
Peachland and Lake Country both didn't offer support for the idea, while West Kelowna council was vehemently opposed.
