Roofing work being done at a condo building under construction that caught fire over the weekend is believed to have started the blaze.
The fire broke out at around 11:30 Saturday morning at Truswell Rd and Capozzi Rd, causing the condo to collapse and flames to spread to nearby buildings.
“At this point we’re still working through all the details to determine how and exactly what happened there,” said Kelowna Fire Chief Jeff Whiting.
“But we are working under the undertaking that it was the roofing work being done on the roof of that building.”
20 units in Water's Edge building were impacted by the fire and residents currently have limited access to the building.
With no less than 30 firefighters battling the blaze at its peak, Whiting says the fire was a massive challenge.
“The heat that we’re dealing with right now, in the 30’s, our crews working hard, physical labour in heavy gear and that heat not only creates challenges for the fire itself and feeds the fire itself but it’s also very draining for our members.”
Three firefighters were sent to hospital, one with burns to his hands while two suffered heat exhaustion.
