Construction continues for a controversial supportive housing project on McCurdy Rd. in Rutland.
The Board of Education and School District #23 are saying their first priority is students' safety as they consider supportive housing project near schools.
School Board Chairperson, Moyra Baxter said they expect the same from the City, the Province and RCMP.
“We also believe that every citizen in the community deserves the opportunity to improve their lives so we understand why these supportive housing developments are really important to our communities
She added that she is confident her students will find positive, compassionate ways to contribute to the project.
“Students in our schools learn to be critical thinkers who seek evidence and they learn to be contributors who are empowered to support their community, and our Rutland students have a strong track record of directly helping vulnerable people,” said Baxter.
She highlighted their work handing out gloves and socks downtown in the winter and serving food at the Gospel Mission.
