The Summerland cat sanctuary Critteraid is currently operating at far beyond capacity.
They're holding a big adoption event today.
They are looking for people who understand the long term commitment of owning a pet, said Animal Care Director Jess Byer.
"It can be about 18 years for a kitten, if not longer, depending on how healthy they are as they age. We are looking for somebody who understands the importance of keeping them healthy, fed and watered, all those things normal things, and providing a loving home.”
Their goal is to educate and encourage people to speak up for animals who are forgotten for so many different reasons.
“We have everybody available from 14 weeks to a couple 11 and 12 year olds that are looking for their forever homes as well. We have every personality type from very outgoing to very shy who just needs a little more time and care. They can be some of the best friends you’ve ever asked for.”
Due to capacity issues, Critteraid is forced to turn away hundreds of cats.
According to Byer, the animals they take in are often feral, abandoned or sick and need somewhere to call a forever home once they are rehabilitated.
“We just ask that everyone is patient that calls us for the address; and that’s just to protect the animals on site and make sure we don’t have too much traffic flow. We just know whose coming and when they're coming,” said Byer.
