In Kelowna court Wednesday, March 28th , the Crown in the case of two people involved in a sex-show-turned-armed-robbery suggested a sentence of over 8 years for both accused.
52-year-old Cal Little, and 25-year-old Heather Nystrom, were both hired by the victim, in July 2016, to perform a live sex show at a University of BC Okanagan apartment. Shortly after arriving, Little pointed a sawed-off shotgun at the victim and declared "this is a robbery."
The two then fled the scene with cash and the victim's cellphone, and were arrested by RCMP a day later.
This past January, both were convicted of multiple charges, including armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of a firearm in a vehicle.
During sentencing Wednesday morning, Nystrom appeared via video conference while Little appeared in person, representing himself.
Defence attorney Mandy Cheema, representing Nystrom, asked for Judge Jane Cartwright to consider a lesser sentence of 5 years, minus nearly 2 years time served, for her client.
Cheema cited steps that her client had been taking towards rehabilitation while in custody, such as getting a grade 12 education and seeking help for her drug addiction.
Judge Cartwright said she would take some time to think about Nystrom's circumstances before sentencing her, and would set a new sentencing date within the next two weeks.
During the proceedings, Little grew impatient, and took exception to not receiving a pre-sentencing report that he was apparently promised, and having to represent himself in court without legal counsel.
A brief argument between Little and Cartwright followed, until Little was sternly told to "sit down and be quiet."
Later, Cartwright agreed to adjourn Little's sentencing, and will prepare a pre-sentencing report to be presented on Tuesday, May 22nd, with Little appearing via video conference.
