Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the Okanagan including Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton.
Meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau says a stream of warm, moist southerly air is moving into the valley and will meet a cold front sweeping in from the coast.
"The combination of those two things will bring showers and thunderstorms, and they also provide the ingredients where we have the possibility for a severe thunderstorm to develop Thursday afternoon and evening," she says.
Charbonneau says we could receive 10 to 15 millimetres during steady showers.
"However, if a severe thunderstorm were to come over your area, they're capabale of producing on the order of 20 to 25 mms of rain in a downpour within a hour, so localized heavy amounts of rain are definitely possible with this situation," she says.
She also warns that hail and damaging winds are possible with thunderstorms.
Charbonneau says showers are expected to continue on Friday with the risk of an afternoon thunderstorm - then for the weekend - a mix of sun and cloud is forecast for Saturday, with a return of cloudy skies on Sunday.
She says there's not much in the way of rain for the valley bottoms this weekend, but there could be showers over the ridge tops which is a concern for those battling flooding.
