The Kelowna Flying Club invites the public to experience a close-up look at a 1943 Silver Spitfire this Thursday morning as it continues its unprecedented flight around the world. Aviation enthusiasts will have the chance to see the plane up close and meet the crew on this brief customs/fuel stop here at YLW.
The Club will also host a fly-in event, providing an exceptional opportunity for pilots from around BC, and beyond, to also take advantage of this singular event. The Silver Spitfire is expected to arrive at around 10am Thursday. The iconic WW ll Fighter will fly a pass down YLW’s Runway 16-34 before landing, providing some exceptional photo opportunities. It will be on static display for about two hours at Kelowna Flying Club, 6135 Airport Way, V1V 1S1.
The Spitfire departed Goodwood, England on August 5 and will continue its spectacular mission as it passes some of the most famous landmarks on the planet - from the glaciers of Greenland to New York’s Statue of Liberty to the snow-capped peak of Japan’s Mount Fuji.
The public is invited to come to the airport to see this amazing aircraft firsthand. There will be a $5 charge per person for airside access to see the plane up-close. Cash only. Kids under 16 free; family admission $10. Fifty per cent of all proceeds will be donated to the Silver Spitfire project.
Temporary free parking for the event will be available on Airport Way on a first come, first served basis. YLW Staff will be on hand to direct parking. The Kelowna Flying Club will host a BBQ which will be limited to fly-in guests and the Spitfire Crew.
