No flight delays at Kelowna International Airport, at least not yet, despite the heavy smoke haze.
Senior Manager of Airport Operations, Phillip Elchitz, says the real threat is if a fire starts five nautical miles from Y-L-W.
"The airtankers and the bird dogs, which are the eyes for the airtanker, have to operate within that vicinity. That starts to affect airport operations. If it's (fire) to the north of the airport we would land from to the south. It normally departs south. If it (fire) is south of the airport, we would land from the north and depart north".
Elchitz says aircraft can land safely at the airport as long as pilots have a half-a-mile of visibility.
Currently, despite the smoke haze, their is about five miles of visibility.
