Marijuana tops the list of issues to be discussed today as federal, provincial and territorial health ministers meet in Edmonton.
While the federal government is in charge of managing the health and criminal code aspects of marijuana - many premiers say next summer's deadline for legalizing pot is too tight for the provinces to meet their responsibilities to sell marijuana and enforce the rules.
Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran agrees saying there many questions around the issue of private versus public pot dispensaries.
"If we allow these private dispensaries to pop up all over the City of Kelowna, and then the provincial government says we're going to go the public route and they're going to be governement run instead - all of the private dispensaries have to close. Who is going to be on the hook for the costs of closing those down and possibly going to court with some of them - it's going to us, the local taxpayers," said Basran
Basran was on AM 1150's "Coffee with the Mayor" Friday morning. He says right now - pot dispensaries are illegal in Kelowna - and his advice to anyone wanting to open one is hold off.
Premier John Horgan has said BC intends to meet the July 1st deadline, but admited there's a lot of work ahead.
